A Practical Teaching on the Mūlapariyāya Sutta (MN 1) with Delson Armstrong

——————————————————————————————————————

n this talk, Delson Armstrong explains the Mūlapariyāya Sutta, known as the “Root of All Things.” First, he shows how ordinary perception leads to conceiving “me” and “mine.” As a result, suffering is repeatedly created through identification with experience. However, this process can be reversed through direct knowing and mindful observation.

Next, the Buddha’s method is clarified. Experiences are perceived, yet they are not owned. Therefore, craving is weakened and conceit is abandoned. Moreover, awareness is trained to remain open and non-grasping. Gradually, the mind is freed from mental proliferation and false self-views.

Finally, practical guidance is offered for daily meditation. By relaxing effort and observing without control, mental agitation is reduced. In this way, insight is cultivated and freedom becomes possible.
