Summerized Interview with Bhante Kusala
In a recent video interview, Bhante answers questions about his new book: One Foot After Another, A Buddhist Monastic Walking Pilgrimage in Sicily. He describes him walking in a group of Buddhist monks in a pilgrimage across Sicily. First, he introduces the ancient practice of tudong, in which monastics travel on foot with minimal possessions. Together with Bhante Suddhāso, Ayyā Somā, and Ayyā Brahmavara, he walks through mountains, villages, and historic ruins while relying on daily alms.
Next, the book shows how physical hardship becomes spiritual training. Long days of walking bring exhaustion. However, they also reveal patience, mindfulness, and letting go. Through light monastic humor and honest reflection, Kusala explains the gradual path of releasing expectations and meeting experience directly.
Moreover, the journey becomes a study of human connection. Local residents offer food, coffee, and rest. In addition, interfaith encounters at Christian shrines show how kindness crosses religious boundaries. These moments highlight the role of admirable friendship and generosity in spiritual life.
Finally, the book presents practical wisdom for daily living. It reflects on suffering, right view, and peace when plans change. One Foot After Another shows that the path to freedom develops step by step, through trust, effort, and simple presence.
